QUT Centre for Justice member, Dr Bridget Weir, has presented as part of the QUT Women in Research Showcase which highlights the work of mid-career researchers making an impact in their area of research.
Bridget presented on her research in the prevention of intrafamiliar abuse and child sexual abuse.
Dr Bridget Weir’s research to prevent child sexual abuse, examines intrafamilial abuse
– what parents know, how they perceive perpetrators and perpetration, and why they
may struggle to recognise threats within their own families or close social networks.
Bridget examines the complex dynamics of intrafamilial abuse, and how it is socially
conceptualised, to deconstruct widespread myths, such as the stranger danger narrative,
that obscure effective prevention. Her work on sexual offender reintegration is
informing the National Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Child Sexual Abuse.
