Dr Jo Kingsman: QUT Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award 2024

QUT Centre for Justice past-PhD student Dr Jo Kingsman has been awarded a QUT Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award for 2024.

The QUT Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Awards was established in 2006 to acknowledge the need to encourage the
promotion of excellence in postgraduate research in Australia.  These awards are intended to develop and support Australia’s vibrant research culture by profiling:

  • Outstanding contribution to knowledge, and/or
  • Demonstration of excellence in postgraduate research.

Jo’s PhD topic is  Making Men: Investigating Adolescent Boys’ Experiences of a School-Based Rites of Passage Program

The thesis explored how school-based rites of passage programs can shape adolescent boys’ understandings of masculinities. Drawing on boys’ own reflections, the research focused on a school-based rites of passage program that was found to foster emotional growth and stronger peer connections. However, the findings highlight the need for programs to more explicitly engage boys in conversations about gender equity, emotional literacy, and gendered power. Such transformative approaches can challenge rigid gender norms and support more expansive, ethical forms of masculinities.
