QUT Centre for Justice Deputy Director, Associate Professor Danielle Watson and member Dr. Sarah Warner have been awarded a DT Global Asia Pacific Grant for a project titled “Developing Security Studies Capacity at the Solomon Islands National University.”
Description:
The Solomon Islands security and education sectors have identified development of an in-country security studies capability as a priority. SINU and AHC have identified QUT to support SINU in developing the capability to deliver Security Studies programming. The grant will seek to:
1. Support SINU’s Security Studies programme development.
2. Conduct research necessary to inform the content of the programme; and
3. Support the upskilling of SINU staff to facilitate programme delivery.
The project will contribute to strengthening frameworks necessary to bolster capacity, partnerships and collaborations between QUT and SINU staff.
Dr. Nyasha Mutongwizo will be appointed as a postdoctoral fellow on the grant.
Danielle Watson is an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow in the School of Justice. She is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of the South Pacific and an Affiliate of the Resilient and Sustainable Islands Initiative (RESI). Her research focuses on Pacific regional security, border security, policing, police/community relations, policing culturally and linguistically diverse communities and plural regulatory systems in the Caribbean and Pacific. She conducts research on (in)security in Pacific Island countries, capacity building for security service providers, recruitment and training as well as many other areas specific to improving security governance in developing country contexts. Her research interests are multidisciplinary in scope as she also conducts research geared towards the advancement of tertiary teaching and learning.
