QUT Centre for Justice member, Professor Cassandra Cross, has co-written a piece for The Conversation titled, “Mastercard plans to get rid of credit card numbers. We could be heading towards the end of cards.” This piece was co-authored with Professor Gary Mortimer from QUT Business School.
The article follows Mastercard announcing plans to remove the 16-digit number from credit and debit cards by 2030 and instead replace this with tokenisation and biometric authentication in a big to stamp out identity theft and fraudulent use of cards.
In the article the authors address the benefits of removing card numbers, as well as the potential problems that may be encountered. They also question whether we will really need cards in the future.

Dr Cassandra Cross is Associate Dean (Learning & Teaching), Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice. She also holds a position as Professor in the School of Justice, Queensland University of Technology. She has recently completed a Senior Research Fellowship, with the Cybersecurity Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) on the topic of romance fraud.
