QUT Centre for Justice and QUT Design Lab look forward to welcoming Michael Rayner AM, Director, Blight Rayner Architects and Victoria Parker, CEO, Lady Musgrave Trust to present a keynote address as part of the upcoming symposium, Design for a Just World. This collaboration seeks to explore the intersection of Design and Social Justice with thought leaders and innovators in their fields.
The keynote address will discuss ‘The Haven House Project’ – a flagship project between the Property Industry Foundation and Lady Musgrave Trust – to provide brand new transitional housing to at-risk young mothers (aged 18-24 years) and their children.
The Lady Musgrave Trust’s Logan Housing Hub will provide up to 4,000 nights of safe accommodation in Logan for young women and children experiencing homelessness due to domestic and family violence. Four self-contained homes will be available for young families, as well as onsite support, social spaces and proximity to schools and transport.
Blight Rayner Architects have provided pro bono services to this project – designing housing that responds to the specific needs of the young women with differing experiences, while imparting a sense of safety, security and community.
Following the keynote address a panel discussion will be held on the topic “Redesigning the Future of Housing”. This panel will include:
- Tom Alves, Head of Development, Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute
- Natalie Rayment, Executive Director at Wolter Consulting Group, Co-founder and CEO of YIMBY Queensland and Member of the Qld Government Housing Supply Expert Panel
- Nicky Middleton, Brisbane Housing Corporate (BHCL);
- Michael Rayner AM, Blight Rayner Architects.
The panel discussion will be facilitated by QUT Centre for Justice member, Dr Lyndall Bryant who is based in the School of Economics and Finance. Lyndall’s work is focused on identifying barriers to effective urban development and providing impactful evidence-based research to inform policy makers. Lyndall recent authored a QUT Centre for Justice Briefing Paper titled, “The role of older Australians in addressing the housing crisis: spare bedrooms, taxation and the pension”,
