Dr Lyndall Bryant: Housing Research and Impact

QUT Centre for Justice member, Dr Lyndall Bryant, has recently published a QUT Centre for Justice Briefing Paper titled, “The role of older Australians in addressing the housing crisis:  spare bedrooms, taxation and the pension’.

Abstract:

Census data indicates there may be as many as 13 million spare bedrooms in existing Australian homes, at a time when rental stress, homelessness and the cost of living are all at crisis point. This paper proposes a novel approach to the housing debate, identifying older homeowners and their empty bedrooms as a potential immediate boost to affordable rental supply. By examining existing tax and pension arrangements in relation to rental income, this paper suggests policy measures that may incentivise older Australians to take in a lodger, thus providing much needed affordable rental stock whilst assisting with their cost of living.

Lyndall comes from the School of Property Economics in the Faculty of Business and Law.    Her work is focused on identifying barriers to effective urban development and providing impactful evidence-based research to inform policy makers. Lyndall is the founder and Chair of the QUT Housing Security Researchers Network, a community of practice formed to collaborate, share knowledge and generate transformative research to deliver tangible economic, environmental and societal benefits in relation to Housing.

Following the publishing of the Briefing Paper Lyndall wrote a piece for The Conversation titled, “Australia has an extraordinary 13 million spare bedrooms. Here’s how to use at least some of them to ease the housing crisis.”

Lyndall appeared in numerous media discussing this research including:

Lyndall also featured in The Finance and Property Survival Guide podcast which aims to provide basic education for young people around budget, financing and buying property.
