“In Conversation”: QPS Assistant Commissioner George Marchesini

This year, QUT Centre for Justice continues its partnership with QCOSS (Queensland Council of Social Services) in bringing you the “In Conversation” series – a live webinar discussion series.   We look forward to the next In Conversation with Assistant Commissioner George Marchesini, Head of Queensland’s Youth Crime Taskforce.

Queensland’s approach to youth crime is expensive, harsh, and the statistics show it’s not working. Queensland children who enter the justice system have the highest rate of recidivism in Australia: children under 12 who are imprisoned are almost 100% likely to reoffend within the year.

QCOSS is leading the Raise the Age campaign in Queensland, fighting for funding for social service sector programs and facilities that we know keep children away from the youth justice system. But to succeed, we need police and government on board.

Assistant Commissioner George Marchesini  agrees that keeping children in detention is not the end solution. So, what alternative does law enforcement propose, and how can the Queensland Police Service work with the sector to achieve meaningful change?
