Abstract: College is supposed to be a place for learning and preparing for one’s future. Some individuals, however, have termed it a rape culture. A rape culture is a place where the incidence of sexual assault is trivialized and victims are blamed even though rape often occurs. This is largely due to common expectations about gender and sexuality. This presentation will discuss the assertion of college as a rape culture, and why observations and research finds partial support for this claim. Then it will go over strategies on how to adequately respond to survivors of sexual violence.

About the speaker: Rebecca Hayes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work at Central Michigan University (USA). She received her Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of Florida (USA). Her research is focused on social justice, violence against women, and media impacts on the justice system.
