In the News: Dr Erin O’Brien discussing the removal of the 457 visas

CJRC researcher and senior lecturer, Dr Erin O’Brien, from the School of Justice, Faculty of Law, has recently spoken to the media about the Australian Government’s plan to scrap the 457 visas. 

Tuesday’s announcement claimed the move would “safeguard” Australian jobs by scrapping the 457 visa for foreign workers and replace it with a temporary visa restricted to “critical skills shortages”.

However, Dr O’Brien argues this move will do little to stop migrant labour exploitation. She explains “Even if you are regulating wages and making sure people are being paid properly for the work they are doing, there are lots of other ways that employers can exploit their workforce that is far less obvious to regulators.”
