Austerity measures and policy shifts in the United States are rippling across to Australia, with regional researchers raising the alarm over the impact of looming cuts to key US science agencies.
Two recent media articles discussed some of the impacts that these changes will bring, including weather forecasting and disaster preparedness and the scaling back of water and sanitation projects in the Pacific.
As part of these impacts, QUT Centre for Justice member, Associate Professor Naomi Barnes, provided commentary stating that Australian researchers will need to consider research partnerships with other European nations, rather than with the United States.
This commentary comes as Australian academics request the federal government to step in and increase its share of funding to fill the gap left by the US administration.
