QUT Law and Creative Industries alumni and QUT Centre for Justice Adjunct Lecturer, Dr Fiona Crawford, has been involved in writing about the recent Homelessness World Cup which brings together more than 70 grassroot organisations that are using football to tackle homelessness and social isolation.
Fiona has also recently published a booked titled, “The Matilda Effect” specifically about the Women’s Football World Cup, focusing on the Australian team, the Matildas, and their football and human rights/gender equality contributions.
Fiona’s contributions in this area align with QUT Centre for Justice’s focus on social justice issues. The book title refers to both the effect the Matildas have had on the sporting and gender equality landscape and a scientific phenomenon called the Matilda Effect, which relates to women scientists’ contributions being overlooked, devalued, or misattributed to the nearest male. This book discusses the idea is that these themes from science are recognisable in women’s sport, and the Matildas are offsetting those themes and giving them new meaning.
