Leading the Conversation: Prof Felicity Deane on Trade, Law, and Climate

Prof Felicity Deane has made significant contributions to public discourse in recent months, demonstrating her position as a leading voice in the intersection of law, trade, and climate policy.

Through a series of well-received articles published in The Conversation, which together have generated 230k reads, Prof Deane has brought complex legal and economic issues into the public spotlight.

Her article titled “Is Australia’s GST a tax or a tariff? And why has it become a target in the trade wars” (18 February 2025) offered a fresh perspective on domestic taxation policy. This was followed by “The next round in the US trade war has the potential to be more damaging for Australia” (18 March 2025), which provided timely insights into the implications of global trade tensions for Australian industries. Most recently, she published “Australia says US beef will soon be welcome here again. It’s unlikely we’ll buy much of it” (24 July 2025), a piece on trade, consumer behaviour, and market dynamics.

These articles have attracted significant media attention. Prof Deane has provided commentary to major outlets including the ABC’s The Economy Stupid podcast episode “When Trade Wars Hit Home”, SBS News’ coverage “Global profits plunge amid Trump’s latest tariffs: what’s at stake for Australia”, and Mirage News’ article “Supreme Court to hear Trump tariffs trade case”. Most recently, Prof Deane was asked by the ABC to comment on Trump’s announcement of 100% tariff on imports of branded or patented pharmaceutical products and the potential impact on Australian companies.

This engagement demonstrated the relevance and impact of Prof Deane’s work beyond academia, contributing meaningfully to public understanding and policy debate.

We congratulate Prof Deane for her outstanding contributions and look forward to supporting her continued work.
