QUT Centre for Justice Director, Professor Rowena Maguire, has authored a piece in The Conversation titled, “Ultra fast fashion could be taxed to oblivion in France. Could Australia follow suit?”

As consumers continue to engage with ultra-fast fashion, Australia has no national policy on the textile industry, and very little is being done to address this issue – even though “we send 220,000 tones of clothes to the dump annually.”

“Ultra fast fashion is deeply unsustainable. Producing it is energy intensive and many low quality items go rapidly to landfill.”

Looking globally, France is planning a tax for each piece of ultra fast fashion, as well as other measures, in an attempt to reduce demand and consumption.

In this Conversation piece, Professor Maguire considers the suitability of these kinds of measures to the Australian textile industry.
