Event: QUT Centre for Justice and QUT Centre for Robotics Disability and Inclusion Symposium

This symposium intends to raise a conversation bringing together QUT researchers across the Centre for Justice and Centre for Robotics, with people and organisations, to support Australia’s Disability Strategy (2021-2031). Bringing together industry, community partners, researchers and government voices, this symposium will discuss what the barriers and opportunities are for supporting inclusion across diverse sectors. Our QUT researchers and international keynote speaker will share perspectives on their participatory approaches, inclusive technologies, and research that they have co-designed with people with disability.

The day includes an International Keynote presentation from Dr Kathleen Sitter, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair, University of Calgary, Canada.  Dr Sitter has worked with a variety of adults and youth in the areas of disability, mental health, human rights, and health care. She currently leads the Multisensory Studio, a lab that focuses on creating blended sensory and arts-based methods in research design and knowledge translation.

In her presentation Dr Sitter will explore how sensory methods in research designs can mitigate ableism.  Citing several examples, this presentation will consider how connection and community can inform the engagement of sensory modalities in understanding first-person narratives.
