To mark the 5th anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security, the QUT Centre for Justice is pleased to host a roundtable discussion that brings together young peacebuilders and early-career researchers to consider youth inclusive peace in the Asia Pacific.
December 9th, 2020 marks the 5th anniversary of the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security (YPS). This ground-breaking resolution
provided youth and their contributions to sustainable peace greater visibility within the formal peace architecture of the international community. This panel brings together young peacebuilders and early-career researchers to consider the YPS agenda in the Asia-Pacific region.
In the Asia-Pacific, youth are taking the lead on a diverse range of issues, including climate change, development, governance, justice, violence prevention, gendered violence, and conflict resolution. The region’s large youth population and intersecting peace and security challenges means that voices from the region, particularly those of youth, are essential to building sustainable peace. Panel contributors will reflect on youth’s contributions to peacebuilding in specific contexts in the Asia-Pacific. They will also consider efforts to engage with youth peacebuilding and with the YPS agenda throughout the region and explore the barriers and opportunities to this engagement.
The panel will be co-facilitated by QUT Centre for Justice members Dr Helen Berents and Dr Caitlin Mollica. Dr. Berents is a DECRA research fellow whose work explores youth-inclusive peacebuilding policy and practice. Dr Caitlin Mollica is a lecturer in the School of Justice whose work examines youth’s participation in post-conflict justice.
Dr Berents and Dr Mollica will facilitate a roundtable discussion with panelists:
• Mridul Upadhyay, Asia Coordinator of the United Network of Young Peacebuilders (UNOY) and Co-founder of Youth for Peace International; co-chair Asia Pacific Interagency Thematic Working Group on Youth, Peace & Security.
• Elaine Pratley, Rotary Peace Fellow, Co-Chair of the Global Peace Conference. PhD Candidate at the University of Melbourne researching young people’s food practices as everyday peacebuilding.
• Primitivo III Cabanes Ragandang, Assistant Professor in the Political Science Department of Mindanao State University-Iligan (Philippines). PhD Candidate at the Australian National University on youth and hybrid political order.
• Erika Yague, Policy Officer for Peace and Security of the UN Major Group for Children and Youth; specialist in areas of young people’s civic engagement and participation in humanitarian, peacebuilding and gender empowerment.
Youth peace advocates and researchers are contributing to critical evaluation and strengthening of youth inclusive peace and security practices in the region and beyond. This panel looks to amplify these voices and contribute to conversations occurring internationally in celebration of the five-year anniversary of UN Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security.
The webinar will be held via Zoom at 6pm (AEST) on Wednesday 25 November. You can register for this free online event here: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/futures-for-youth-inclusive-peace-in-the-asia-pacific-tickets-126367971003
