Professor Kerry Carrington from School of Justice, Faculty of Law, along with other academics and youth justice advocates, have petitioned the QLD Government to make significant reforms to juvenile justice practices and policies in the state. The petition is gaining momentum and was today featured in a Brisbane Times media article.
Queensland Attorney General Yvette D’Ath has commented on this issue, stating “It is Labor party policy to remove 17-year-olds from adult prisons”.
She explained “The Palaszczuk Government has already taken the first step to doing this by ending the automatic transfer to adult prisons upon turning 17”.
“Moving 17-year-old who may be physically as developed as adults into youth detention centres with boys and girls who in some cases are younger than 12 raises some complicated issues.
“The Government is working to address these issues.”
