Upcoming Event — “Women in Prison Task Force Report: 30 Years On”

NSW

The NSW Women in Prison Task Force Report was released in 1985. It contained 269 recommendations. Central to the report was the view that the number of women in prison should be reduced and that most of the women in prison should not be there as they were not a threat to the community. Thirty years on the numbers and rate of women in prison in NSW have increased dramatically. But what ever happened to the Task Force Report’s recommendations?

This event will include a panel discussion with members of the Task Force Ann Symonds AM (Deputy Chair) and Helen L’Orange AM, as well as contemporary commentators on women in prison Kat Armstrong (WIPAN), Peta MacGillivray (Aboriginal lawyer and researcher), Dr Ruth McCausland (UNSW) and Professor Julie Stubbs (UNSW). Our MC will be journalist and broadcaster Sharon Davis. Minister Brad Hazzard (Family and Community Services) will provide views and comment.

This event is organised and co-hosted by Professor Eileen Baldry (UNSW), Professor Julie Stubbs (UNSW) and the Sydney Institute of Criminology.

  • Time: 6 – 7.30pm
  • Location: Sydney Law School, Law Lounge (Level 1), New Law Building (F10), Eastern Avenue, University of Sydney
