Dr Malcolm Smith (Australian Centre for Health Law Research, QUT): Gender dysphoria is a serious condition that can cause significant psychological symptoms including anxiety and depression, self-harm and suicidal ideation. Australia is the only country in the world that requires parents to seek court approval prior to the administration of cross-gender hormone treatment. The burden of the legal process on families is potentially significant. In this session, we explore the impact of the legal regime and consider the ethical issues associated with hormone treatment for childhood gender dysphoria.
