Australian Pandemic History

This blog provides a general historic overview of the epidemics/pandemics which have occurred in Australia.

Definitions:

Epidemic – is a disease that affects a large number of people within a community, population, or region.

Pandemic – is an epidemic which has spread across multiple countries or continents.

Endemic – something which belongs to a particular ‘people’ or country.

Outbreak – a greater than anticipated measure in the number of endemic cases. It can also be a single case in a new area. If it is not quickly controlled, an outbreak can become an epidemic.

1789 Smallpox epidemic among Aboriginal people; 750-2600 deaths
1867 Measles epidemic in Sydney city + inner suburbs; 748 deaths (February-June)
1875-6 Scarlet Fever epidemic Australia-wide; 8000 + deaths
1890 Flu pandemic; 234 deaths
1891-1910 Typhoid epidemic – worst affected area was WA goldfields-overcrowding + unsanitary conditions; 2000 deaths reported but believed to be much larger
1900-1910 Bubonic plague; 550 deaths
1918-1920 1918 Flue pandemic; 12,000 deaths
1946-1955 Polio epidemic; 1,013 deaths
1981 to March 2012 HIV-Aids pandemic; First cases reported in 1981; in 2018 770,000 deaths (estimated) (worldwide related to this decease; 6507 deaths in Australia
2009 2009 flu pandemic; 191 confirmed deaths; death tall possibly as high as 1600
