My university exchange at Kansai Gaidai in Kyoto, Japan, was a transformative experience that allowed me to develop and expand upon my Japanese language skills, immerse myself in the local culture, and establish lasting friendships. The opportunity provided valuable personal growth as I adapted to life in a new country, gaining confidence and independence along the way.

Learning Japanese and the culture

Kyoto offered an ideal environment to practice the Japanese language in real-life situations. Enrolled in immersive language courses at Kansai Gaidai, I engaged with locals and other exchange students regularly, gradually improving my language skills, and gaining confidence in expressing myself and conversing in Japanese.

Kyoto’s rich history and traditions allowed me to explore Japanese culture deeply. As the former capital city, Kyoto is a city steeped in traditional customs and practices. From serene temples and lively festivals to vibrant street markets, I experienced the customs and traditions that shape Japanese society. Being able to engage in activities such as tea ceremonies, traditional dance performances, and many festivals, provided unique insights into the country’s artistic and cultural heritage.

Travelling Around Japan

During my university exchange in Kyoto, I had the opportunity to explore other parts of Japan, including an unforgettable trip to Tokyo. This excursion allowed me to witness Japan’s diverse offerings beyond Kyoto’s cultural charm. In Tokyo, I experienced a unique cultural fusion at a Japanese Oktoberfest, held surprisingly in May! The event showcased a delightful blend of traditional German festivities infused with Japanese flair and was definitely one of the highlights of my trip. Beyond that, I visited Tokyo Disneyland, and also a bakery run by the sister of Hayao Miyazaki (the writer of many famous Studio Ghibli films) so everything was Totoro-themed! Overall, my Tokyo adventure complimented my university exchange in Kyoto, providing a broader understanding of Japan’s cultural richness and diversity. These cherished memories will forever hold a special place in my heart, serving as a testament to the profound impact of my time in Japan and the lasting connections I forged during my transformative journey.

Connecting with Fellow Students

The diverse community of exchange students at Kansai Gaidai was great for making a lot of international friendships. Bonding over shared interests in Japanese culture, we explored Japan together and celebrated various festivals. It was fascinating to interact with individuals from different backgrounds, each bringing their own unique perspectives and experiences to our dynamic group.

Additionally, Japanese students at Kansai Gaidai welcomed us warmly, which allowed us to forge meaningful connections with local peers. Their hospitality and genuine interest in learning about our cultures contributed to a rich cultural exchange that extended beyond the classroom. These friendships not only enhanced my understanding of Japanese customs but also left me with a lasting appreciation for the importance of global connections.

Challenges are always a part

Living in a foreign country posed challenges that demanded adaptability and resilience. Navigating public transport, acclimating to different social norms, and managing daily tasks in an unfamiliar environment initially felt overwhelming. However, with time and determination, I became more adept at managing these challenges, which fostered a sense of independence and self-assurance.

The experience taught me the value of embracing change and finding strength in discomfort. Overcoming language barriers and cultural differences allowed me to develop a more open-minded and accepting outlook towards new experiences, which I believe will serve me well in both personal and professional aspects of life.

Precious Memories

My university exchange to Kyoto, Japan, at Kansai Gaidai was a fulfilling experience that extended far beyond the confines of a typical academic journey. It provided ample opportunities to practice the Japanese language, delve into the local culture, form lasting friendships, and grow personally by adapting to life in a new country. I will cherish the memories and learning experience I gained on this exchange. As I returned to my home country, I brought with me a profound appreciation for Japan’s cultural heritage as well as long lasting friendships with people all over the world. The lessons learned and the memories created during my exchange will undoubtedly influence my future pursuits and continue to inspire a sense of curiosity and openness towards the world.
