Gabriel – University of South Carolina – USA
Semester 2, 2022
Bachelor of Business
Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine, and I was fortunate enough to participate in a student exchange program in the United States at the University of South Carolina (USC). It was a life-changing experience that broadened my horizons and opened my eyes to a different culture and way of life.
My exchange program was in Columbia, South Carolina and I stayed in a dorm on campus named McBryde. While McBryde wasn’t the most glamourous living space, the friendships I formed with my “Mc-Brothers,” are certainly life-long. Living with them allowed me to immerse myself in American culture and get a glimpse of what it’s like to live in the United States. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by how friendly and welcoming everyone was.
My classes were held on campus, and I was amazed by the quality of education I received. The professors were knowledgeable and engaging, and the courses were challenging yet rewarding. I also had the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities, such as joining an intramural sports team and attending sporting events (College Football). These activities allowed me to meet new people and make lifelong friendships.
Outside of the university, I had the chance to explore the surrounding areas and travel to other parts of the country. I visited iconic landmarks like the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and the Statue of Liberty in New York City. These experiences were truly unforgettable, and I felt incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to see and experience so much.
But perhaps the most meaningful aspect of my exchange program was the relationships I built with everyone I met along the way. They taught me so much about American culture and traditions, and I shared with them my own experiences and customs from my home country. We bonded over meals, conversations, shared experiences, and a few drinks at times, and they made me feel like a part of their family.
In conclusion, my student exchange program at USC was an enriching and life-changing experience. I learned so much about myself, others, and the world around me, and I came back to my home country with a new perspective and appreciation for a different culture. It was an experience that I will always cherish and never forget.
