Life in London

Madison – University of Westminster – England

Semester 2, 2022

Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Laws (Honours)

I had the opportunity to chase a once in a lifetime experience of studying abroad at the University of Westminster in London. By pursuing this opportunity, I was challenged to leave my comfort zone and live without the safety and security of my home environment. The application process involved QUT approval, followed by a further individual application to the University of Westminster.  As part of the application, I was required to demonstrate my desire to participate in the University of Westminster’s exchange programme, apply for accommodation and show that I was able to support myself. Due to Covid I had to complete this process on more than one occasion, however my determination to pursue the opportunity heightened. Working part-time during my studies at QUT enabled me to be self-sufficient for this experience. Before I knew it, I had a 24-hour trip ahead of me, about to embark on this journey where I would be living and studying in another part of the world.

During my semester abroad I studied International Business Law, Digital Business and Behaviour in Organisations. Throughout my units I completed a number of formative group tasks and summative individual tasks. As part of my International Business Law unit, I was invited to attend a tour of the historic legal district, Temple, as well as the Royal Courts of Justice. This tour shed light on the historical as well as present day aspects on how English law evolved. Walking past solicitors’ offices and barristers’ chambers, I got a glimpse of potential life within the legal profession. Outside of my study commitments, I was able to explore other countries and culture during my spare time.

Notably, I have gained more confidence, social poise and newfound independence. Being immersed in a different culture, my problem-solving skills have enhanced. I was challenged to step out of my comfort zone and be exposed to a new situation in a foreign environment filled with new people and new experiences. I embraced my time abroad and have made lifelong connections, both fellow students and teaching staff. The opportunity to study abroad is one I will forever look back on as a valuable life experience that was a part of my studies. I am now very much encouraged and motivated to look towards starting my career in the legal profession. I await to see where that takes me.
