Lucy – University of Leeds – England
Semester 2, 2024
Bachelor of Communication
Last September, I was fortunate enough to relocate to the UK for a semester exchange at the University of Leeds where I encountered a new style of learning, met amazing new people, and tried to adjust to British winter (emphasis on the tried to).
Attending university in a new city took a bit of getting used to – it’s a lot of adjusting to the new styles of teaching, living in a new space, trying not to look surprised every time I saw a cute bunny just hoping about and finding the exact science on how many layers are necessary to go out at what temperature.
Some Learning Highlights: During my exchange, I was fortunate to attend the first speech of the BBC’s chairman, Dr. Samir Shah, where he outlined his vision for the future of UK public service broadcasting and shared his priorities for the BBC in the years ahead. And unexpected highlight for me was exploring the world of British politics and the reportage from the Westminster Lobby in my Journalism, Politics and Society module.
Learning aside, Leeds was such a great place for anyone looking for a booming social scene. There are so many opportunities and events to help you find “your people”. I joined a netball society where I met some amazing girls and had the chance to stay active also.
This exchange was such a life-changing experience that has taught me so much and introduced me to opportunities I will cherish forever.
My advice to anyone, in any stage of their exchange journey, would be to just take the leap of faith. I guarantee no matter your experience, it will be worth it.
