2008 was the first year that Brisbane City Council launched Black History Month after consultation with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, who were in strong support for a cultural program that highlights their heritage, culture, achievements and contributions. “The communities suggested a range of activities for the broader community to enjoy and better understand the history and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Brisbane.” (Brisbane City Council, 2021)
