Who can forget going to the library in primary and high school? Perhaps you went to the library to research an assignment, read a book or use the computers. There’s no doubt that teacher librarians are incredibly skilled in a wide range of areas – after all, they have to be equipped to teach students from grades 1-12 and that’s no mean feat!
On Saturday, over 100 teacher librarians from around Queensland were treated to a free professional development day right here at QUT.
The day kicked off with some much needed morning coffee and a welcome from QUT Library Director, Sue Hutley. Dr Mandy Lupton was first cab off the rank with her session on inquiry and information literacy: questioning frameworks and critical evaluation of information.
Engaging students in literature was the next topic of discussion from Dr Erica Hateley. A quick cameo performance from QUT Library’s Associate Director, Martin Borchert, on eBooks was followed by a lovely lunch.
The afternoon was all about spaces. Kim Lewin, the Library’s Associate Director for Client Services and Learning Support took all of the participants on a tour of P Block at Gardens Point to check out the Science Education Centre’s innovative learning spaces. Finally, Dr Hilary Hughes shared her wisdom and expertise regarding the design of library learning spaces.
When asked what the most important learning of the day was, one teacher librarian summed it up beautifully:
“There are so many passionate teacher librarians willing to give up a Saturday and so many talented experts teaching in this area willing to share their learning on a Saturday, This is such a vital area of education and needs support and recognition. Thanks for today.”
