Associate Professor Tina Cockburn TEP, Dr Kelly Purser TEP and Dr Sherrena Buckby were recognised by the Financial Planning Education Council (FPEC) with a Research Grant Award at the 2019 FPA Awards.
Tina, Kelly and Sherrena received the $5,000 award for their research proposal which is titled ‘The role of financial planners in preventing, recognising and responding to elder financial abuse’.
Elder financial abuse is defined by the World Health Organisation as ‘the illegal or improper exploitation or use of funds or resources of the older person’. With the Australian population ageing at increasing rates, there is an increased risk of escalating elder financial abuse in this country.
Dante De Gori CFP®, CEO of the Financial Planning Association of Australia (FPA), said that the research will add significantly to the body of work on the important issue of elder financial abuse.
“High quality academic research into financial planning is very important to the profession as it raises the profile and standing of the industry, both in the community and at a policy level”.
It is anticipated the final report will be submitted in February 2021. We wish Tina, Kelly and Sherrena success with this important research.
