Recognition for the Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS)

The Australian Child Maltreatment Study (ACMS) team, led by ACHLR researcher Professor Ben Mathews (pictured, right) and supported by Divna Haslam (pictured, left) as Project Manager, has been recognised with a Queensland Child Protection Week award for Professional (Non-Govt) – Outstanding contribution to promoting child protection issues in their capacity as a professional working in child protection.

The ACMS generated the first reliable evidence of the Australian prevalence of all five types of child maltreatment, and of their different impacts on health. It made recommendations for reforms to improve prevention and responses to child maltreatment, which were relevant across government portfolios including child protection, health, communities, and education. Governments across Australia, including the Queensland Government, are now using the ACMS results and recommendations to reform policy, procedure, and practice to better prevent and respond to child maltreatment.

Congratulations to Ben, Divna and the entire ACMS team.
