Adjusting to university Gardens Point campus Student life

Maximize your QUT O-Week experience

Hello everyone!

Well, the new semester is commencing really soon, so that means that O-week is here. In this post, I will be sharing various ways to fully maximize your orientation experience.

Joining clubs and societies

Most of the clubs and societies will have a booth showcasing what they do. There is definitely a club or society for everyone, so I highly recommend you signing up for something that caters to your interests so that you can pass your spare time meaningfully.

Attend orientation programs

Be it international student talks, campus tours or faculty sessions and activities, there are heaps of programs you can sign up to, to better familiarise yourself with the university environment as well as meeting new friends. Check out the essential orientation programs on the QUT HIQ page and sign up.

Chill, eat and freebies

O-week means $2 lunches, free things such as QUT shirt (for new students), snacks and semester planners and live entertainment. What could be better than this? Don’t forget to walk around both school campuses (Kelvin Grove and Gardens Point) with your friends and enjoy your time with them!

Getting your essentials

O-week is the best time to equip yourself with necessities like your student ID card, overseas student health cover card (if you haven’t done this already), activating your QUT printing account, and applying for public transport concessions- just to name a few. There may be QUT bookshop vouchers handed out during O week, so feel free to grab a few and make your way down to the bookshop to get new textbooks or stationery.

Exploring Brisbane

Of course, if you have spare time, take the opportunity to explore Brisbane or even other parts of Queensland as it may be slightly difficult to do so once the new semester commences. If you are seeking free places to visit, be sure to check out my upcoming post on “free places to visit in Brisbane”. Alternatively, check out the past blogs which featured some places of interests that you can visit during your stay in Australia.

Best of luck to everyone who is about to start their new semesters and hope you enjoy your O week at QUT!

Hi everyone! I am Nicola and I'm from Singapore. I decided to come to Australia to study because I wanted to pursue my passion for dance at QUT, as well as to gain new and memorable experiences overseas. After graduating from QUT International College I decided to take my passion for Dance further with a double degree in Dance and Education. While studying at QUT I have become actively involved in the local dance community and attend international dance competitions whenever possible. I am certainly enjoying my time studying here at QUT and thankful for all the opportunities QUT has provided for me. My goals are to inspire others and impart my knowledge to future students who can grow and learn from my experience.
