The QUT Faculty of Education hosted a group of 25 Education professionals from East Java, Indonesia for a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Australia Awards Fellowship funded program during August 2014. The cohort consisted of mainly teachers and principals as well as specialist inclusive education coordinators selected by the counterpart organisation, the East Java Education Agency. The Developing Strategic Leadership for Inclusive Education in East Java program ran for four weeks and focused on many aspects of inclusive education culminating in a presentation of how they would share and implement strategies for inclusive education in East Java upon their return to Indonesia.
The East Java Education Agency believes that the Fellowship activity has provided immense benefit for the professional development of the Fellows. With support from the Agency, Fellows will be implementing inclusive education principles and teaching methods developed during the program across East Java, which hopes to set a benchmark for other provinces in Indonesia to follow.
Faculty of Education academics who worked with the group found them to be very knowledgeable about inclusive and special education as well as extremely positive and appreciative of the opportunity to further develop their skills in Australia. The QUT Faculty of Education will continue to work with the Agency and the Fellows through regular contact and a follow up visit to East Java in early 2015 to witness the implementation of the strategies developed from the program.
