Global Education for the Filipino Youth

By Lilia Habacon, Philippines

In 2014, the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System sent seven recipients of the Australian Award Fellowship. They developed the PSHS 6-Year Curriculum Framework that has been used in 16 campuses across the Philippines. After four years of implementation, PSHS System has seen significant impact that reflects better quality education for its 8,864 scholars. In 2018, PSHS campuses dominated the Top 10 national performance ranking in the college admission test of the University of the Philippines, our country’s premier university. PSHS students got 93rd percentile in mathematics in the US-based
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Moreover, 78 students qualified in universities in the United States, Australia, Japan, United Kingdom, and Singapore among others. The PSHS System considers the survival of scholars from Grades 7 to 12, so it invests in proper guidance and teaching strategies to ensure quality instruction is provided to the scholars. Consequently, Class 2018 has 92 percent cohort survival rate. The curriculum has served as a foundation that equipped PSHS scholars to bring home 93 awards in international physics, biology, chemistry, robotics, mathematics, and information technology competitions and research fairs worldwide. After 50 years of existence, the PSHS curriculum has included the Service, Creativity, Action, and Leadership Enhancement (SCALE) Program that provides scholars with opportunities to engage in collaboration and service to their school and community. All the 1,041 graduates in 2018 underwent the SCALE Program. The intensive 6-Year PSHS curriculum has helped scholars to become knowledgeable, open-minded, reflective, and principled inquirers, communicators, and risk-takers who are expected to be leaders in science and technology for nation building. The number of applicants
for admission in PSHS in 2018 increased by 8.20 percent—a proof that the PSHS curriculum has attracted more students dreaming to become a PSHS scholar with a life-changing experience to unfold.
