\nBachelor of Business<\/h4>\n

15,484km, 30 hours and 3 flights, to travel to one of the coldest countries on the planet and all I can say is, i<\/span><\/span>t was worth every second! <\/span>For any student considering doing an exchange in the Nordic countries, I would seriously recommend Sweden. To help you decide I will be going through my trip <\/span><\/span>highlights, accommodation<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>what to pack<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>travel,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Just a side not<\/span><\/span>e –<\/span><\/span>\u00a0I went in January and was supposed to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>stay<\/span><\/span> for a whole year, but unfortunately due to COVID-19, I<\/span><\/span>\u00a0had<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to come back after 3 months.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What to Pack<\/span><\/h4>\n

First, Gothenburg is completely different to Brisbane. You will be in the heart of the city and yet it <\/span><\/span>will not have the same feel as a typical <\/span><\/span>CBD. The obvious factor being the weather; it <\/span><\/span>gets very\u00a0<\/span><\/span>very<\/span><\/span>\u00a0cold\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and if\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you\u2019re<\/span><\/span>\u00a0lucky to go in summer you might only need<\/span><\/span> one jumper. With this being said,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0clothes are your <\/span><\/span>first priority – <\/span><\/span>make sure you get thermals,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0sweaters,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>winter jackets,<\/span><\/span> and boots. Your boots especially will be your lifesaver when it comes to travelling and exploring the city. Waterproof boots are ideal as <\/span><\/span>you\u2019re<\/span><\/span>\u00a0going to be stepping\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in a<\/span><\/span> few puddles during your stay.<\/span><\/span> Your most important piece of clothing is going to be your winter jacket; I guarantee you are going to be wearing one everywhere you go! I would suggest purchasing this prior to leaving Brisbane, however Sweden certainly has a varied selection so you will not have an issue either way.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Travel<\/h4>\n

As an exchange student, <\/span><\/span>you will<\/span><\/span> have multiple opportunities to socialise and meet the most amazing people. Try to take every opportunity to make friends; <\/span><\/span>after all, they are going to be your family for your time abroad!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0I was fortunate enough to join a club through one of my friends which led me to travel to Finnish Lapland.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The club I joined was the Erasmus Student Network (ESN),<\/span><\/span> which is <\/span><\/span>really popular<\/span><\/span>\u00a0amongst the European\u00a0<\/span><\/span>students. ESN<\/span><\/span> provides great <\/span><\/span>opportunities<\/span><\/span> to travel north and to other <\/span><\/span>places,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0such as Russia. The club also has numerous social activities that they run\u00a0<\/span><\/span>weekly and are<\/span><\/span>\u00a0great for meeting new people and making friends!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>If\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you\u2019re<\/span><\/span>\u00a0looking to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>explore<\/span><\/span> Europe, flights are cheap and there are often discounts to numerous <\/span><\/span>places<\/span><\/span>. There is also the Train system which can take you to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the capital, Stockholm.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Accommodation<\/h4>\n

In Gothenburg you will be given the choice of two main <\/span><\/span>accommodations; <\/span><\/span>Helmutsrogatan<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Olofsh\u00f6jd<\/span><\/span>. Both are great facilities with water and electricity included. Both places also have a \u2018free shop\u2019 – make sure you ask around or <\/span><\/span>investigate<\/span><\/span> it; trust me <\/span><\/span>you\u2019ll<\/span><\/span>\u00a0save\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a lot of<\/span><\/span> money! Also, make sure to take a Wi-Fi router with you as it <\/span><\/span>is not<\/span><\/span> provided. <\/span><\/span>I\u00a0<\/span><\/span>got an apartment\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Helmutsrogatan<\/span><\/span> which I personally think is better as you get more privacy and your own kitchen, <\/span><\/span>unlike\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Olofsh\u00f6jd<\/span><\/span>. However, <\/span><\/span>Helmutsrogatan<\/span><\/span>\u00a0is approximately $800 <\/span><\/span>AUD, whereas<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Olofsh\u00f6jd<\/span><\/span> is quite cheaper. In my opinion, even though I wanted to save money during my exchange experience for travel and other <\/span><\/span>activities, <\/span><\/span>the privacy was well worth the additional expense. Not only was the added privacy great, but everything was within walking distance, which included <\/span><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>convenience store,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>tram system<\/span><\/span>, and<\/span><\/span> the University of Gothenburg. To further elaborate, it only took me between <\/span><\/span>5-15 minutes. <\/span><\/span>The ice h<\/span><\/span>ockey stadium,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Liseberg<\/span><\/span> Amusement Park, and the football stadium <\/span><\/span>is also just a tram ride away.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gothenburg<\/h4>\n

I honestly loved this place;<\/span><\/span>\u00a0it\u00a0<\/span><\/span>has amazing architecture and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0city layout makes you feel like\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you are<\/span><\/span>\u00a0living in a different era. Some days\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you will<\/span><\/span>\u00a0wake\u00a0<\/span><\/span>up to<\/span><\/span> snow, and others you’ll wake up to a nice beautiful sunny clear day.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0There <\/span><\/span>are<\/span><\/span> archipelag<\/span><\/span>os (collection of islands)<\/span><\/span> which you can visit by tram, which was convenient. The tram system is <\/span><\/span>similar to<\/span><\/span> our bus system, in the sense that it can get you anywhere you want to go in the city. Swedish people also love their coffee and snacks – look up \u2018<\/span><\/span>Fika<\/span><\/span>\u2019 and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you will<\/span><\/span>\u00a0understand. There are amazing parks with seals,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>deer<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>penguins,<\/span><\/span> and elk. You can also explore the local museum and nightlife.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Costs<\/h4>\n

Housing: approximately $500-800 AUD a month.<\/span><\/p>\n

Semester costs for travel, entertainment, food, and other expenses<\/span>: $10,000-$15,000 depending on personal preferences, interests, goals, and of course if you want to travel to other places in Europe. <\/span>Sweden is also not the cheapest place to travel to, as the cost of living is on par (if <\/span>not more than) with Brisbane, so definitely take that into account. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Studying<\/h4>\n

The way they run their semesters in Sweden are different to QUT<\/span><\/span>. If you choose 4 subjects for a semester you will be doing them one-by-one instead of all at once. <\/span><\/span>Personally,<\/span><\/span> I liked it as I only had to focus on 1 subject at a <\/span><\/span>time,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0so you get a lot of spare time to travel and stress less.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
