{"id":9073,"date":"2021-01-03T10:00:25","date_gmt":"2021-01-03T00:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/?p=9073"},"modified":"2021-01-13T16:30:43","modified_gmt":"2021-01-13T06:30:43","slug":"by-river-and-sea-rise-my-time-in-burnaby-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/2021\/01\/03\/by-river-and-sea-rise-my-time-in-burnaby-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"By River and Sea Rise: My Time in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Georgia \u2013 Simon Fraser University \u2013 Canada<\/h3>\n<h4>Semester 1, 2020<br \/>\n\u200bBachelor of Public Health<\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Although my exchange<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">sadl<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">y cut short\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">due to the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> COVID-19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0pandemic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, I\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">am grateful for the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0wonderful three months\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I experienced studying at Simon Fraser University<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0(SFU)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in Vancouver, Canada.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Prior to exchange, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he furthest I had travelled was to New Zealand<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and I had always lived at home with my family. Exchange was not only an opportunity to study and travel in a new country, but it was also a personal challenge. My ultimate goal, more than studying, travelling and m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">eeting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0new friends, was to grow as an individual.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I absolutely loved studying at SFU! <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I arrived in late December 2019\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Spring Term at SFU (which was the middle of Winter in Canada).\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The campus had beautiful views of lakes and snow-capped mountains, numerous running trails and was only a 45-minute bus ride from Vancouver city. At SFU, students are graded on their attendance and participation, therefore my classes were very engaging, and we had many insightful and challenging discussions about public health issues. The assignments were creative and interesting \u2013 I wrote a report on youth homelessness in British Columbia, participated in-class debates, analysed films and song lyrics about teen sexuality and created beautiful chalk artworks with my peers on campus to promote body image positivity. During my time at SFU, I felt very inspired. My passion for public health and my desire to learn new things grew significantly. I think it is a testament to the wonderful education system Canada has developed and it was such a privilege to experience studying at a Canadian university. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-30.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9076 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-30-e1606111463678.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-30-e1606111463678.jpg 563w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-30-e1606111463678-300x256.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 563px) 100vw, 563px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Exchange also presented many personal challenges.<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">I cannot explain how much I missed my family, church community and friends back home. At the beginning of my exchange I met a number of other exchange students and we all \u201cbanded together.\u201d However, over time I found that I connected best with the Canadian students &#8211; I really appreciated their friendly, relaxed culture that was so similar to my own. I developed a small but wonderful group of Canadian friends; some of which I had classes with. They showed me their favourite places in Vancouver, invited me into their homes, and cooked me authentic Canadian food. I will always be so grateful to my Canadian friends \u2013 they showed me warmth and hospitality when I needed it most<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9077 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-31-e1606111425106.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-31-e1606111425106.jpg 356w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-31-e1606111425106-223x300.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 356px) 100vw, 356px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I think exchange is a wonderful experience that you can talk about with future employers. I was able to develop a greater understanding of public health in a global context,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">specifically the different health challenges that countries face, and also how the structure and outcomes of health care systems vary across the world. It was also a great opportunity to study units that I was not able to choose at QUT, which provided me with a niche area of knowledge.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-33.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9078 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-33-e1606111445734.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-33-e1606111445734.jpg 355w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-33-e1606111445734-222x300.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For students considering going on exchange, I encourage you to apply!\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Be open-minded about the experience \u2013 it won\u2019t always be aesthetic travel photos for your Instagram<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(although Canada is great for that!). It will be lonely at times, and you will encounter many hardships. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">What I can promise is that it will be overwhelmingly positive, and you will have many fond memories of people you meet, the things you learn, and the places you visit.
