{"id":9030,"date":"2020-12-04T09:58:52","date_gmt":"2020-12-03T23:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/?p=9030"},"modified":"2020-12-04T09:59:37","modified_gmt":"2020-12-03T23:59:37","slug":"san-jose-small-town-heart-big-city-soul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/2020\/12\/04\/san-jose-small-town-heart-big-city-soul\/","title":{"rendered":"San Jose: Small Town Heart, Big City Soul"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Samuel \u2013 San Jose State University \u2013 California<\/h3>\n<h4>Semester 1, 2020<br \/>\nBachelor of Business\/Bachelor of Law (Honours)<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW29025365 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW29025365 BCX0\">Going on exchange to San Jose State University<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW29025365 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW29025365 BCX0\">\u00a0(SJSU)<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW29025365 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW29025365 BCX0\">\u00a0in my third year of study was something that I had wanted to do ever since I started tertiary education.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW29025365 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW29025365 BCX0\">Although I didn\u2019t know anyone going from QUT, where I should book my accommodation, or if I had picked the right partner university for me, I knew that it would be an unforgettable experience regardless and I<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW29025365 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW29025365 BCX0\">\u00a0was definitely<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW29025365 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW29025365 BCX0\">\u00a0right.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW29025365 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Accommodation<\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The first step after being accepted by your partner university is finding a place to live. Thankfully SJSU provide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> all students with the option to live on-campus, which I utilised, and ended up being one of the best decisions I made. It provided me with the opportunity to meet fellow students and fully immerse myself in the college experience.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I lived in Campus Village B which is a 15 story tower that houses second, third, and fourth-year students (Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors). <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In a typical living space with four single bedrooms, there <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0one bathroom and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">kitchen.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Compared to living off-campus it was relatively expensive with a cost of USD$6,896 for one semester. Although a bit more expensive <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">than off-campus housing, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I would recommend to anyone who has the option to live on-campus that they do so as it makes it easier to meet new people and commute to your classes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9246\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9246\" style=\"width: 355px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/11\/SJSU-Campus-Village-e1604644913774.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9246\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/11\/SJSU-Campus-Village-e1604644913774.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"474\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9246\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My student accommodation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Food<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\">At SJSU the meal plan is a little expensive<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\">\u00a0when you work it out on a per meal basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\">I ended up paying<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\">\u00a0roughly\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\">USD$11 per meal with the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\">\u2018Social Plan\u2019<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\">\u00a0The plan gave me USD$500 worth of dining dollars that can be used at places like Subway<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\"> and Taco Bell,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\">\u00a0along with 145 entries to the dining commons.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\"> It would be significantly cheaper to cook all of your own meals, but for the convenience of having food as soon as you arrive and the peace of mind<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\"> that knowing that you\u2019ll always have something to eat<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW202960079 BCX0\">\u00a0I definitely thought it was worth it.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW202960079 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">University Experience<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n my opinion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the university experience at SJSU was a lot more immersive than QUT as there were so many associations to join or events to attend on any given night. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My advice is to get out of your comfort zone and attend everything you can as you never know what you could be interested in.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With the majority of students living on or around campus, the vibe is significantly different to QUT, where the majority of students don\u2019t live on or even near the campus. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The teaching style at SJSU is also different to QUT. In Brisbane, you would normally have a 2 hour lecture and a 1 hour tutorial both once a week, whereas over there, there <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">aren\u2019t many large lectures like we have at QUT<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and you would ordinarily have two 1.5 hour tutorials a week for the class. In regards to assessment, a lot of the course work at SJSU is done on a week-by-week basis and counts for a lot less of your overall grade in comparison to QUT, where you normally complete one or two large assessment pieces worth 10%-40% of your grade.\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Insurance<\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW93027780 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW93027780 BCX0\">One thing that I wish I was told before I went is that SJSU requires you to purchase their own insurance. This caught me and a few other QUT students off guard as we thought that being covered by QUT&#8217;s policy was sufficient. I<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW93027780 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW93027780 BCX0\">f you\u2019re thinking of going to SJSU, make sure you purchase their insurance as well.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Social Life<\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Living on campus definitely helped with the social aspect of my exchange. Being placed into a room with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">other students allowed me to meet new people straight away and dive right into the college experience. Overall, everyone at SJSU was extremely welcoming and helped me out with a lot of things such as <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">my insurance and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">getting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Clipper Card from SJSU for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) which is similar to a go card, but allows students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to use public transport for free<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another piece of advice would be to check out all of the different associations and sports teams that are set up around campus on week 2. I joined the Financial Management Association and the Men\u2019s Rugby team and loved every minute of it. It\u2019s a great way to make friends and find interesting things to do.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/11\/Samuel-SJSU-e1606373381474.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9250\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/11\/Samuel-SJSU-e1606373381474.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"151\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/11\/Samuel-SJSU-e1606373381474.jpg 151w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/11\/Samuel-SJSU-e1606373381474-142x300.jpg 142w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 151px) 100vw, 151px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Travelling<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW27261379 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27261379 BCX0\">If you like hiking and adventuring then SJSU is definitely for you. There are so many locations to go to in Northern California, such as Yosemite or Lake Tahoe, that are amazing at any time of year.
