I had one minor to complete and knew what I wanted to study, but QUT didn\u2019t offer it. I was stuck. This is when one of my tutors suggested I apply for exchange. My mind instantly went to \u201comg that sounds terrifying but awesome!\u201d As someone who is cautious about how far they throw themselves out of their comfort zone, I decided I wanted to study in the UK \u2013 as I had been there for holidays before and loved it. So<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW251175109 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251175109 BCX0\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW251175109 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251175109 BCX0\">\u00a0I researched and found the course I wanted to do, but it wasn\u2019t offered on the exchange list \u2013 so I emailed QUT STAE and asked if it was possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW251175109 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251175109 BCX0\">Thankfully it was my lucky day<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW251175109 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW251175109 BCX0\">\u00a0\u2013 it was only not offered as no one had asked to do the course before!<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW251175109 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\">The next thing I knew, I was off to study Equine Science at Oxford Brookes University! Oxford is a beautiful\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\">city located southwest of London.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\">\u00a0The stone buildings are gorgeous to look at, though building appreciation wasn\u2019t always at the top of my to-do list with the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\">number<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\">\u00a0of pubs around! I would recommend checking out the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\">Lamb and Flag<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\">Turf Tavern,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\">\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\">Kings Arms<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98689570 BCX0\">. The best part was as everything is within walking distance, pub crawls were a regular event!<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW98689570 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"TextRun SCXW173634447 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW173634447 BCX0\">Tip 1: thoroughly explore Oxford City, as there are so many hidden gems!<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW173634447 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW173634447 BCX0\">\u00a0Everything is within walking distance, so you don\u2019t have to worry about transport either (though there is the free uni bus too).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/11\/1big-e1604640512571.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9241 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/11\/1big-e1604640512571-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"359\" height=\"638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/11\/1big-e1604640512571-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/11\/1big-e1604640512571-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/11\/1big-e1604640512571-768x1365.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>Accommodation<\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For accommodation, I stayed in one of the university halls \u2013 Paul Kent Hall. It had just been renovated so I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">along with the 11 other people on my floor were lucky enough to enjoy brand new everything! Everyone quickly became friends, not just with the people on our floor, but the whole building.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I met other amazing people from Australia, Germany, France, America, Finland, Canada, Kazakhstan, and Switzerland.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0My floor became known as the \u201cparty floor\u201d as we regularly held gatherings and even started a \u201cfamily dinner\u201d night each week<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, where someone from a different country would cook each week.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tip 2: Stay in accommodation with the biggest amount of people. You make so many more friends and memories this way!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9027\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Paul Kent Hall was only a 20-minute ride on the university\u2019s bus from the main campus or a 30-minute walk. This made it super easy to get to classes. I LOVED the four classes I took<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: it was great to learn about the English ways of doing things and I was able to compare with them the Australian way. T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">here were only 10 of us (Equine Science is a pretty niche topic)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0so I got to know everyone really well<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 even my lecturers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I will forever hold connections with both my friends and the lecturers, who were more than keen to help as much as they could.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tip 3: Become friends with everyone \u2013 English students and staff are so friendly and willing to help as long as you are keen too!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tip 4: Study on campus and make use of the facilities\u2013 you are there to experience a different university, not just your room.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a part of my<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0cours<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, I was able to participate in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0multiple<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0incredible<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">opportunit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ies. One<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0attend the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">National Equine Forum in London: excitingly, I was seated close to Princess Anne! Another was to conduct a small behavioural experiment with the university\u2019s horses, which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0actually<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0allowed me to continue my QUT thesis that I had just completed the semester before.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9028\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-3.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2020\/10\/Webp.net-resizeimage-3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The university also offered exchange students various opportunities both in Oxford and around the country: pub crawls, trivia nights, a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">igh\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ea, walking tour<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of the city, and a tour of Christchurch College (a part of Oxford University)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. My favourite though was a day trip to Bath<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even though i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t was drizzly and cold<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(for the record, most other days were sunny),\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">seeing The Circus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and The Crescent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, tasting the water at the Roman Baths,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eating lunch at Sally Lunn\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0was amazing!\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Did you know: residents would spen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0all their money making the front of their house look\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">posh<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to show off, but would leave the back of their house plain and boring because no one could see it!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tip 5: Tour as much as you can, whether that be through the university or organised yourself.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW82375819 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82375819 BCX0\">The hardest part of my exchange experience was having to come home early. My classes were moved online and thankfully the <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW82375819 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2 SCXW82375819 BCX0\">timezone<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW82375819 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82375819 BCX0\"> difference wasn\u2019t too bad. I had learned <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW82375819 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82375819 BCX0\">and experienced so much in just 3\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW82375819 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2 SCXW82375819 BCX0\">months,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW82375819 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-AU\" xml:lang=\"EN-AU\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82375819 BCX0\"> I could only imagine what the other 3 months would have brought!\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Exchange has been one of the best experiences of my life&#8230;I would do it all again in a heartbeat if I could!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jessica &#8211; Oxford Brookes University &#8211; Oxford, UK Semester 1, 2020 Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) I went on exchange in my final year of university.
