{"id":5153,"date":"2017-12-20T23:10:36","date_gmt":"2017-12-20T13:10:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/qut-exchange-students\/?p=5153"},"modified":"2017-12-20T23:10:36","modified_gmt":"2017-12-20T13:10:36","slug":"leeds-survival-guide-part-3-the-studies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/2017\/12\/20\/leeds-survival-guide-part-3-the-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Leeds Survival Guide, Part 3: The Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having just finished my final class for the semester, I now have a one month break before exams and so, I decided to let you all know what the studies here at Leeds have been like.<\/p>\n<p>To get an idea of where I&#8217;m coming from, I did the following three modules this semester:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Understanding the Audience<\/li>\n<li>Beginners French<\/li>\n<li>Career Development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some of the differences I&#8217;ve experienced between studying at QUT and the University of Leeds:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. I received a lot of handouts at Leeds<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For every class I received at least one piece of paper per lesson, which rarely happens at QUT<\/li>\n<li>Buy yourself a display folder before leaving because they are extremely hard to come by in Leeds for some unknown reason<\/li>\n<li>They&#8217;re also handy to keep your travel documents in while travelling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/qut-exchange-students\/files\/2017\/12\/61bVGVixbgL._SL1500_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5154\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/qut-exchange-students\/files\/2017\/12\/61bVGVixbgL._SL1500_-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2017\/12\/61bVGVixbgL._SL1500_-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2017\/12\/61bVGVixbgL._SL1500_-768x481.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2017\/12\/61bVGVixbgL._SL1500_-1024x642.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2017\/12\/61bVGVixbgL._SL1500_-479x300.jpg 479w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2017\/12\/61bVGVixbgL._SL1500_.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Referencing is different to QUT\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I recommend downloading EndNote (A free referencing software) because Leeds has their preferred referencing method available to be downloaded and it makes referencing so much faster and easier<\/li>\n<li>QUT has this available too if you didn&#8217;t know!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Most classes take attendance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The amount of times you can miss class depends on your course but for media, missing 5 classes resulted in being contacted and questioned<\/li>\n<li>Be careful with planning big trips during class time; I recommend travelling before the semester starts or during December before the exams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. Not all lectures\u00a0are recorded<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>None of mine were, which meant I had to actually pay attention<\/li>\n<li>It was definitely difficult not being able to go back and rewatch lectures, but this just made me listen harder and take more notes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>5. A passing grade is 40\/100<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This changes depending on what you study but this is the passing grade for most courses<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s definitely a lot easier to pass at Leeds, but from my experience, it&#8217;s a little more difficult to do well<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>6. For all my media students out there, be aware that media at QUT is a lot more modern and practical whereas at Leeds it&#8217;s a little more traditional<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You&#8217;ll most likely find powerpoint slides with plain black text on white background and no pictures or videos<\/li>\n<li>For the assignments, Leeds wanted a lot of academic study examples, whereas QUT usually prefers that students find their own examples from tv shows, articles or other media<\/li>\n<li>With that being said, Axel Bruns who works at QUT did make an appearance in my reading list one week for his work on convergence, so the content isn&#8217;t\u00a0<em>that\u00a0<\/em>different from QUT, it&#8217;s just a little more bland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>7. Finally, less of a difference but a great recommendation, if you have a free elective, do Career Development<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Career development is a 20 credit module (60 credits makes up 48 QUT credits) so I only had to do 3 units to get a full study load (this left me with time to travel on weekends!)<\/li>\n<li>It was pretty much a big reflection unit on what I want to do in the future<\/li>\n<li>Along with it being quite easy it was actually pretty useful in helping improve my resume and my interview skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even though it&#8217;s been different here in Leeds, it&#8217;s definitely been a worthwhile experience, mainly because I get to study in buildings such as this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/qut-exchange-students\/files\/2017\/12\/IMG_20170914_123518.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5155 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/qut-exchange-students\/files\/2017\/12\/IMG_20170914_123518-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2017\/12\/IMG_20170914_123518-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2017\/12\/IMG_20170914_123518-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, I highly recommend you come to the University of Leeds to experience studying here yourself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Having just finished my final class for the semester, I now have a one month break before exams and so, I decided to let you all know what the studies here at Leeds have been like.
