Embarking on a year of study abroad at Copenhagen Business School<br \/>\n(CBS) in Denmark was a life-changing decision that pushed me beyond my comfort zone and<br \/>\ninto a world of cultural exploration and personal growth. As an Australian student, the<br \/>\nprospect of immersing myself in the Danish culture and academic landscape both excited<br \/>\nand intimidated me. However, the experience turned out to be a profound journey, one that<br \/>\nI will forever cherish. In this blog, I will recount my transformative year in Copenhagen,<br \/>\ntouching on topics such as preparing to depart Australia, my first impressions of the city and<br \/>\nuniversity, unexpected surprises, cultural challenges, and the differences between life in<br \/>\nDenmark and Australia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2023\/08\/Untitled.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10241\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2023\/08\/Untitled-300x118.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2023\/08\/Untitled-300x118.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2023\/08\/Untitled-1024x402.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2023\/08\/Untitled-768x301.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2023\/08\/Untitled.png 1134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Preparing to Depart Australia:<\/h4>\n<p>Preparing for a year of study abroad required meticulous planning and a keen sense of<br \/>\nadventure. From visa applications and accommodation arrangements to ensuring I had the<br \/>\nnecessary finances, the process demanded attention to detail. I found that seeking advice<br \/>\nfrom fellow students who had previously studied abroad and attending pre-departure<br \/>\nsessions offered invaluable insights and helped calm any pre-travel jitters.<\/p>\n<h4>First Impressions of Copenhagen, Accommodation, and University:<\/h4>\n<p>Stepping foot in Copenhagen for the first time was an enchanting experience. After the first<br \/>\n24 hours, I completely fell in love with the city! The city&#8217;s blend of historic charm and<br \/>\ncontemporary architecture was captivating. I was delighted to find that my student<br \/>\naccommodation was conveniently located, allowing easy access to both the university and<br \/>\nthe vibrant city centre. Settling into my cosy dorm room, I eagerly anticipated the upcoming<br \/>\njourney.<br \/>\nCBS welcomed me with open arms, and the campus buzzed with a lively atmosphere. The<br \/>\nuniversity&#8217;s commitment to fostering an inclusive and innovative learning environment was<br \/>\nevident from day one. The modern facilities, interactive classrooms, and vibrant student<br \/>\ncommunity all contributed to a warm and welcoming ambiance. The CBS exchange program<br \/>\nwas very hands-on from the beginning, and they had tons of activities\/events planned out<br \/>\nfor all the exchange students for the entire semester. This was the perfect opportunity to<br \/>\nmeet other exchange students from around the world.<\/p>\n<h4>Unexpected Surprises and Unforeseen Challenges:<\/h4>\n<p>Living in a new country inevitably brings with it delightful surprises and unforeseen<br \/>\nchallenges. Denmark&#8217;s emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly practices impressed me<br \/>\ngreatly. Witnessing the widespread use of bicycles as the primary mode of transport was not<br \/>\nonly environmentally conscious but also a pleasant surprise.<br \/>\nHowever, I did face certain cultural challenges, primarily stemming from the language<br \/>\nbarrier and differences in social norms. While most Danes spoke impeccable English, I<br \/>\noccasionally encountered situations where the lack of fluency in Danish created minor<br \/>\ncommunication hurdles. Moreover, understanding the nuances of Danish social etiquette<br \/>\nand humour took time, but I learned to adapt with an open mind and a willingness to learn.<\/p>\n<h4>Life in Denmark vs. Australia and Settling In:<\/h4>\n<p>Compared to life in Australia, Denmark&#8217;s collective focus on work-life balance and social<br \/>\nwelfare was refreshing. The slower pace of life and emphasis on relaxation and leisure<br \/>\nprovided a stark contrast to the sometimes frenetic pace of Australian cities. I gradually<br \/>\nadapted to the Danish lifestyle, savouring the joy of &#8220;hygge&#8221; gatherings with friends,<br \/>\nexploring the city&#8217;s cultural attractions, and relishing the delectable Danish cuisine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2023\/08\/Untitled-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10240\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2023\/08\/Untitled-2-300x124.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"578\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2023\/08\/Untitled-2-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2023\/08\/Untitled-2-768x317.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/gone-global\/files\/2023\/08\/Untitled-2.png 982w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Managing to settle in involved actively engaging with the university community and<br \/>\nparticipating in various student clubs and events. Building with both Danish and<br \/>\ninternational students was instrumental in fostering a sense of belonging. Additionally,<br \/>\nexploring the city&#8217;s neighbourhoods, attending local festivals, and embracing Danish<br \/>\ntraditions all contributed to a seamless integration into Danish life.<\/p>\n<h4>My Experience at Copenhagen Business School:<\/h4>\n<p>The academic experience at CBS surpassed all my expectations. The teaching style was<br \/>\ndynamic and interactive, encouraging critical thinking and stimulating discussions.<br \/>\nProfessors were approachable and invested in each student&#8217;s success, fostering a sense of<br \/>\ncollaboration and academic camaraderie.<br \/>\nExams and assignments were designed to challenge and inspire students, with a focus on<br \/>\npractical applications that prepared us for real-world scenarios. Group projects provided an<br \/>\nopportunity to work with diverse teams, allowing us to gain insights from various<br \/>\nperspectives.<\/p>\n<h4>Advice for Aspiring Travelers:<\/h4>\n<p>For students preparing to travel to Copenhagen or any foreign destination, my advice would<br \/>\nbe to approach the experience with an open mind and a willingness to embrace the<br \/>\nunknown. Immerse yourself in the local culture, make connections with fellow students, and<br \/>\nactively engage in university and community events. Learn basic phrases of the local<br \/>\nlanguage and be patient with yourself as you navigate the inevitable challenges that come<br \/>\nwith living abroad. Above all, cherish every moment of this enriching journey, for it will<br \/>\nundoubtedly shape your perspective and leave an everlasting impact.<br \/>\nStudying abroad at Copenhagen Business School was an unforgettable adventure that<br \/>\nbroadened my horizons and enriched my life in countless ways. Embracing Danish culture,<br \/>\nnavigating cultural differences, and meeting so many people from around the world all<br \/>\ncontributed to a transformative experience. This year of study abroad not only deepened<br \/>\nmy understanding of the world but also helped me discover facets of myself I had yet to<br \/>\nexplore.
