Archie – City University of London – United Kingdom
Semester 2, 2023
Bachelor of Business and a Bachelor of Laws
Following my high school graduation in 2020, I commenced studying a Bachelor of Business and a Bachelor of Laws at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Halfway through my third year of this degree, I had the privilege of securing a semester long overseas exchange at the City University of London, of which I enjoyed immensely.
Studying at City University of London
The City University of London is located in the London borough of Islington, and has strong links with the City of London, which is the one of the leading financial centres of the world, home to both the London Stock Exchange and the Bank of England. As a finance student myself, being immersed at a university nestled among towering skyscrapers housing some of the world’s most foremost businesses such as Lloyds Bank, Bloomberg and Goldman Sachs, was truly remarkable and certainly added a touch of excitement when attending class. Among my most cherished recollections from my time abroad were the journey’s to and from class aboard the world-renowned London Tube, where I found myself truly immersed in the vibrant tapestry of diverse cultures and unique experiences which London is home to.
Experiencing London Life
While initially feeling slightly overwhelmed by the idea of forging friendships in the vast expanse that is London, by stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing the lively college atmosphere at the university, I discovered a circle of lifelong friends who became an integral part of my immensely enjoyable overseas experience. Whether that was cheering on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, or sharing stories over a pint at one of London’s many historical pubs, the cherished moments spent with new friends truly enhanced my experience, and I encourage you to seize every opportunity to connect with others, because, believe me, you won’t regret it.
Traveling Across Europe and the UK
The main highlight of my time abroad was most definitely the amount of travel I was able to do, across both Europe and the UK. This included going to a couple of Rugby World Cup games in France, reuniting with old friends in Oxford, and catching up with mates from Australia who were also on exchange, exploring cities like Milan, Liverpool and Prague together. Being so close to Europe was definitely a bonus, and I highly encourage you to make the most of it if you decide to embark on an exchange journey in the UK.
Although it may feel intimidating initially, I strongly encourage any QUT students considering completing an exchange to embrace the experience wholeheartedly and approach it with an open mind. So take the leap, and enjoy the adventure!
