{"id":6819,"date":"2026-01-14T08:14:14","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T22:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/?p=6819"},"modified":"2026-01-14T08:14:14","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T22:14:14","slug":"publication-dr-fiona-crawford-could-heated-rivalry-bring-a-whole-new-fanbase-to-ice-hockey-and-can-the-sport-embrace-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/2026\/01\/14\/publication-dr-fiona-crawford-could-heated-rivalry-bring-a-whole-new-fanbase-to-ice-hockey-and-can-the-sport-embrace-them\/","title":{"rendered":"Publication &#8211; Dr Fiona Crawford:  &#8220;Could Heated Rivalry bring a whole new fanbase to ice hockey \u2013 and can the sport embrace them?&#8221;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-5741\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/files\/2023\/07\/Fiona-Crawford-600x600-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/files\/2023\/07\/Fiona-Crawford-600x600-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/files\/2023\/07\/Fiona-Crawford-600x600-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/files\/2023\/07\/Fiona-Crawford-600x600-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/files\/2023\/07\/Fiona-Crawford-600x600-1-370x370.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(Feature image courtesy Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>QUT Centre for Justice member, Dr Fiona Crawford (pictured), has co-written a piece for The Conversation this week on the topic, &#8220;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/could-heated-rivalry-bring-a-whole-new-fanbase-to-ice-hockey-and-can-the-sport-embrace-them-272702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Could Heated Rivalry bring a whole new fanbase to ice hockey \u2013 and can the sport embrace them?&#8221;<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/strong>In this piece Fiona and co-author <a href=\"https:\/\/experts.deakin.edu.au\/65570-Kasey-Symons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Kasey Symons<\/a> from Deakin University use the TV program <em data-start=\"2909\" data-end=\"2925\">Heated Rivalry<\/em> as a case study to explore how queer romance can challenge exclusionary sports cultures, expand audiences, centre joy, and potentially drive real-world change\u2014if sporting bodies are willing to listen and evolve.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fiona and Kasey point out that a central theme of the program\u00a0is the stark lack of openly queer men in professional sports, especially compared with women\u2019s sport. <em data-start=\"272\" data-end=\"288\">Heated Rivalry<\/em> presents a world where queer male athletes are visible, loved, and successful\u2014highlighting how far real-life men\u2019s sport still has to go.\u00a0 The authors discuss instances where inclusion in sport has been attempted but perhaps mishandled &#8211;\u00a0 demonstrating that surface-level gestures are insufficient without genuine understanding and protective policies.<\/p>\n<p>The authors conclude,<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The market is there, it\u2019s not what you\u2019d expect, and it\u2019s finally being catered to. Sports organisations should be paying attention.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr Fiona Crawford works with the Homeless World Cup, a social enterprise that uses football to tackle homelessness. She has\u00a0 written two books on women\u2019s football:<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unsw.press\/books\/never-say-die\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Never Say Die: The Hundred-Year Overnight Success of Australian Women\u2019s Football<\/a><\/em> (co-written with Lee McGowan) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com.au\/books\/Matilda-Effect\/Fiona-Crawford\/9780522878004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Matilda Effect<\/em><\/a>. Both focus on the intersection of gender equality with football\u00a0 &#8211; recognising that sport can be an incredible lens for examining social issues and a fantastic platform for enacting social change.<\/p>\n<p>Fiona is an adjunct lecturer at the QUT Centre for Justice, and her research and work spans social and environmental issues and the arts, with particular focus on the topics of football (soccer), homelessness, and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>In 2026 Fiona will lead a <strong>QUT Centre for Justice Briefing Paper Series<\/strong> on <strong>Sport and Social Change<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0As we prepare to host the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, an event that will entail local and global social, cultural, economic, and environmental outcomes, the QUT Centre for Justice is calling for papers into sport for social change.
