{"id":6549,"date":"2025-05-22T15:28:02","date_gmt":"2025-05-22T05:28:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/?p=6549"},"modified":"2025-05-22T15:28:02","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T05:28:02","slug":"dr-jo-kingsman-qut-outstanding-doctoral-thesis-award-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/2025\/05\/22\/dr-jo-kingsman-qut-outstanding-doctoral-thesis-award-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr Jo Kingsman:  QUT Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>QUT Centre for Justice past-PhD student Dr Jo Kingsman has been awarded a <strong>QUT Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award for 2024.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The QUT Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Awards was established in 2006 to acknowledge the need to encourage the<br \/>\npromotion of excellence in postgraduate research in Australia.\u00a0 These awards are intended to develop and support Australia\u2019s vibrant research culture by profiling:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Outstanding contribution to knowledge, and\/or<\/li>\n<li>Demonstration of excellence in postgraduate research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jo&#8217;s PhD topic is\u00a0 <strong>Making Men: Investigating Adolescent Boys&#8217; Experiences of a School-Based Rites of Passage Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The thesis explored how school-based rites of passage programs can shape adolescent boys\u2019 understandings of masculinities. Drawing on boys\u2019 own reflections, the research focused on a school-based rites of passage program that was found to foster emotional growth and stronger peer connections. However, the findings highlight the need for programs to more explicitly engage boys in conversations about gender equity, emotional literacy, and gendered power.
