{"id":6164,"date":"2024-07-15T10:17:57","date_gmt":"2024-07-15T00:17:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/?p=6164"},"modified":"2024-07-15T10:17:57","modified_gmt":"2024-07-15T00:17:57","slug":"qut-c4j-hdr-winter-school-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/2024\/07\/15\/qut-c4j-hdr-winter-school-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"QUT C4J HDR Winter School 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>QUT C4J ran its annual HDR Winter School from 8-10 July at Kelvin Grove Campus.\u00a0 We had 45 students in attendance over the three-day program which included methodological sessions like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Survey Design: Avoiding the 7 Deadly Sins<\/li>\n<li>Games for Research<\/li>\n<li>Social Listening<\/li>\n<li>PhD by Publication vs PhD by Creative Works<\/li>\n<li>Participatory Action Research Methods and<\/li>\n<li>Conducting Systematic Reviews.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It also included research support sessions such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conducting Ethical Research<\/li>\n<li>How to get off to the right start in your PhD<\/li>\n<li>Research Funding and Grant Applicaitons<\/li>\n<li>Navigating Interdisciplinary Research Environments<\/li>\n<li>Researcher Positionality and Reflexivity<\/li>\n<li>Researcher well-being<\/li>\n<li>Publishing<\/li>\n<li>Researching vulnerable and hard to reach groups<\/li>\n<li>Demystifying AI for Research<\/li>\n<li>Disseminating your Research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our final session included a number of QUT alumni, all working in different fields post-PhD, as they spoke about Life beyond the PhD.<\/p>\n<p>The third day of the program was a Writing Retreat facilitated by Dr Abbe Winter from QUT Design Lab, and the CIESJ Faculty Writing Coach.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you to all of our presenters who spoke so knowledgeably about their topics.\u00a0 Thank you also to our HDR Working Committee who helped to build a diverse and relevant conference program.\u00a0 The Committee included Kelsey Adams, Emma Rees, Marcelo Dias and Melissa Giles.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the early feedback received included:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>&#8220;I learnt so much&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>&#8220;The Writing Retreat was amazing!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>&#8220;Life beyond the PhD was highly valuable with relatable panelists doing diverse and interesting things.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>&#8220;I hope this event becomes a mainstay.
