{"id":5408,"date":"2023-02-07T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2023-02-06T23:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/?p=5408"},"modified":"2023-02-07T14:08:24","modified_gmt":"2023-02-07T04:08:24","slug":"rosa-del-olmo-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/2023\/02\/07\/rosa-del-olmo-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Rosa del Olmo Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crimejusticejournal.com\/index\"><em>International Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy<\/em><\/a> (IJCJSD) has announced the establishment of a prize for best article(s).<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Rosa del Olmo Prize<\/strong> is awarded biennially for the\u00a0<em>IJCJSD\u00a0<\/em>article(s) that, in the Editors&#8217; opinion and based on the recommendations of a panel of experts, <strong>most contributes to innovative thinking in the development of criminology beyond Western scripts.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The prize commemorates the work of Venezuelan critical criminologist Rosa del Olmo (1937-2000), whose contributions are only recently being rediscovered by criminologists worldwide.\u00a0Professor Rosa del Olmo was &#8220;a leading figure in the world of left-wing criminology. Pioneer of critical criminology in Latin America, feminist and inexhaustible social fighter and one of the most well-versed criminologists in the socio-political and economic analysis of drug trafficking&#8221; (Padilla, 2016). Among others,\u00a0del Olmo published in 1975,\u00a0<em>Limitations for the prevention of violence: The Latin American reality and its criminological theory<\/em>, which for\u00a0Shank and Dod (1987: iii) was\u00a0a significant paper in the development of &#8216;Latin American Critical Criminology&#8217;.\u00a0Around a decade later, del Olmo published her pathbreaking (1987) article, <em>Aerobiology and the war on drugs<\/em>, which appeared in a special issue of\u00a0<em>Crime and Social Justice (<\/em>see<em>\u00a0<\/em>South, N.
