{"id":5355,"date":"2022-11-30T12:30:02","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T02:30:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/?p=5355"},"modified":"2022-11-29T14:38:18","modified_gmt":"2022-11-29T04:38:18","slug":"our-research-housing-homelessness-and-front-line-service-providers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/2022\/11\/30\/our-research-housing-homelessness-and-front-line-service-providers\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Research:  Housing, homelessness and front line service providers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>QUT Centre for Justice is building a strong body of research in relation to Housing and Homelessness.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\">As part of a QUT Centre for Justice-funded research project, Dr Shane Warren and\u00a0 Adam Barnes of <strong>QUT School of Public Health and Social Work<\/strong> hosted two focus groups with specialist homelessness services and housing providers from around Queensland.\u00a0 These focus groups were to discuss the observations of front line service providers about the nature of family homelessness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\"> Some of the topics explored included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\">the structural drivers of family homelessness, <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\">the gendered nature of poverty and homelessness, <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\">tight housing markets with housing stock not suited to families, <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\">the impact of population increases in Queensland on already stressed and under-resourced housing and homelessness service systems, <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\">the need for greater supply of affordable housing and flexible support services, <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\">a crisis accommodation system under immense strain with very few pathways out of homelessness for families, <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\"><span class=\"xxxcontentpasted2\"><span style=\"background: white\">the need for better alignment between housing and support policy, and <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"xmsonormal\" style=\"background: white\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\"><span class=\"xxxcontentpasted2\"><span style=\"background: white\">inter-sectorial issues with child protection, health, employment, income support and criminal justice systems<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\">The findings of this research will be published in a QUT Centre for Justice Briefing Paper early in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;color: black\">Agency partners involved in this project include Brisbane Youth Service, Anglicare Southern Queensland, Micah Projects Inc.,\u00a0 Communify, Hinchinbrook Community Centre, Encircle, Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre, QShelter, the Salvation Army, Family Emergency Accommodation Townsville and National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Other QUT Centre for Justice work in this area in 2022 included\u00a0\u00a0involvement in the<a href=\"https:\/\/research.qut.edu.au\/centre-for-justice\/projects\/womens-butterfly-project-empowering-mature-women-to-maintain-secure-housing\/\"> Butterfly Project<\/a>\u00a0 &#8211; a project that researches and provides solutions for mature women dealing with homelessness.<\/p>\n<p>During 2022 QUT Centre for Justice co-hosted the <strong>Lady Musgrave Trust 14th Annual Women and Homelessness Forum<\/strong> and during this forum released a Briefing Paper titled,\u00a0<strong>\u201cYoung homeless people and domestic and family violence:\u00a0 Experiences, challenges and innovative responses\u201d<\/strong> written by Danielle Davidson (QUT), Bridget Harris (Monash University) and Helena Menih (LaTrobe University).\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/2022\/08\/09\/qut-centre-for-justice-briefing-paper-young-homeless-people-and-domestic-and-family-violence-and-the-handy-guide\/\">Read more here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>QUT Centre for Justice looks forward to growing its research in this important area in 2023.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QUT Centre for Justice is building a strong body of research in relation to Housing and Homelessness.
