{"id":4733,"date":"2021-10-25T11:22:22","date_gmt":"2021-10-25T01:22:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/?p=4733"},"modified":"2021-10-25T11:22:22","modified_gmt":"2021-10-25T01:22:22","slug":"international-open-access-week-25-29-october-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/2021\/10\/25\/international-open-access-week-25-29-october-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"International Open Access Week &#8211; 25-29 October 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>So what is open access?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><em>Open access (OA) is a set of principles and a range of practices through which research outputs are distributed online, free of cost or other access barriers.\u00a0 Through licensing via an open license (usually a\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/about\/cclicenses\/\"><em>Creative Commons License<\/em><\/a><em>), freely available outputs can also be legally shared and reused. Hence, open access is more than just free access.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">(Open Access Australasia <a href=\"https:\/\/oaaustralasia.org\/2021\/05\/25\/what-is-open-access\/\">https:\/\/oaaustralasia.org\/2021\/05\/25\/what-is-open-access\/<\/a> )<\/p>\n<p>In 2003, QUT endorsed the world&#8217;s first institutional open access policy. In 2018, the policy was updated to reflect emerging global practices and QUT continues to support open scholarship via <a href=\"https:\/\/eprints.qut.edu.au\/\">QUT ePrints<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/researchdatafinder.qut.edu.au\/\">Research Data Finder<\/a>, open educational resources and national and international open access initiatives.<span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">\u00a0QUT also supports the publication of <\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\" href=\"https:\/\/www.library.qut.edu.au\/about\/collections\/qutejournals\/\">five open access journals<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\"> including the <\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crimejusticejournal.com\/\"><strong><em>International Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy<\/em><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">, in the Centre for Justice and supported by the School of Justice.\u00a0 Content is published under a\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\" href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/\">Creative Commons<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">\u00a0Attribution Licence and there are no article processing charges (APCs) to be paid by authors. These journals are published with the support of QUT Library using the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\" href=\"https:\/\/pkp.sfu.ca\/ojs\/\">Open Journals System (OJS)<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px\">\u00a0software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This year the Journal attained the <a href=\"https:\/\/oaaustralasia.org\/2021\/07\/29\/seal-of-approval-for-open-access-journals\/\">Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) Seal<\/a>.\u00a0 The DOAJ Seal is a mark of certification for open access journals, awarded by DOAJ to journals that achieve a high level of openness and adhere to best practice and high publishing standards.<\/p>\n<p>Only 9% of journals indexed by DOAJ have been awarded the Seal, and of these only nine journals from Australasia have the seal \u2013 three of these are QUT journals (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crimejusticejournal.com\/\"><strong><em>International Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>; <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lthj.qut.edu.au\/\"><strong><em>Law, Technology and Humans<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>, <\/em><\/strong>and; <a href=\"https:\/\/studentsuccessjournal.org\/\"><strong><em>Student Success<\/em><\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In SCImago, the Journal ranks highly in terms of its open access \u2013 1<sup>st<\/sup> in LAW and 1<sup>st<\/sup> in SOCIOLOGY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE in Australia &#8211; and in the top 50 internationally.
