Congratulations to QUT Centre for Justice member, Dr Erin O’Brien<\/strong> who has been\u00a0 awarded a Discovery Early Career Research\u00a0 Award (DECRA) to commence in 2021 to study the role of civil society in mobilising ethical consumerism and investor activism to combat modern slavery.<\/p>\n

The DECRA success rate for 2021 was 17% nationwide, with 6 DECRA’s awarded across QUT.\u00a0 This further reinforces the high quality of Erin’s application – \u00a0 https:\/\/www.qut.edu.au\/news?id=170688\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Erin’s project is titled:\u00a0 “Australian civil society combating modern slavery with ethical consumerism”<\/strong><\/p>\n

To combat the grave problem of modern slavery in supply chains, governments rely on consumers and investors to hold corporations accountable. Yet little is known about the critical role civil society plays in empowering citizens to serve this function. In this world-first study of an anti-slavery advocacy network, this project aims to investigate how civil society can mobilise ethical consumerism to combat slavery. This project expects to generate new knowledge on how civil society can work with the state to address complex issues with ethical consumerism. Expected outcomes include the integration of successful strategies into policy and advocacy, to provide significant benefits in building Australia\u2019s capacity to eradicate modern slavery.<\/p>\n
