The conference will be held in Cairns from 10-13 July 2017 and will feature <a href=\"http:\/\/crimejusticeconference.com.au\/international-speakers\/\" target=\"_blank\">international speakers:<\/a><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Professor Rosemary Barberet;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Professor Jiahong Liu;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Professor John Braithwaite; and<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">Professor Raewyn Connell.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Abstracts for the conference are now due by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>31 March 2017!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">To showcase the diversity of topics that will be presented during the conference, each week the CJRC blog will feature an accepted abstract from a presenter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">This\u00a0week&#8217;s featured abstract is\u00a0authored by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.unsw.edu.au\/profile\/hadeel-al-alosi\" target=\"_blank\">Hadeel Al-Alosi<\/a>, an academic lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>&#8220;Self-Produced Media and Fantasy Crime&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">by\u00a0Hadeel Al-Alosi, UNSW<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Unlike the previous generations, individuals today are not merely consuming media online, but creating their own material and exchanging it among a wide and global audience. The use of the internet is characterised by increased cooperation, participation and interaction among users who use it to express themselves. The availability and affordability, and apparent anonymity provided by the internet provides an ideal space to share one\u2019s fantasies, some of which may be regarded as deviant. Of concern is that the law has not caught up with the way in which individuals are using the new digital communication technologies to exchange content, as highlighted by the potential criminalisation of young people who create material containing sexually explicit themes under the child abuse materials legislation. Accordingly, the proposed presentation seeks to discuss how the development of new technologies necessitate re-examining the law in light of the different types of user-generated content. It is particularly concerned with user-generated content in the form of fan fiction stories and deviant forms of art, both of which have become a popular mode of expression, especially for young people throughout Australia and Asia. As will be discussed, some of this material contains sexually themes that trigger the child abuse material legislation or the censorship laws, thus highlighting the law\u2019s unintended consequences and its chilling effects on expression.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year the Crime and Justice Research Centre will co-host the Crime and Justice in Asia and the Global South International Conference with the Asian Criminological Society.
