{"id":2109,"date":"2016-11-11T10:31:35","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T00:31:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/?p=2109"},"modified":"2016-11-11T10:31:35","modified_gmt":"2016-11-11T00:31:35","slug":"qut-law-lecturer-appointed-as-chairperson-of-qld-sentencing-advisory-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qut.edu.au\/crime-and-justice-research-centre\/2016\/11\/11\/qut-law-lecturer-appointed-as-chairperson-of-qld-sentencing-advisory-council\/","title":{"rendered":"QUT Law Lecturer Appointed as Chairperson of QLD Sentencing Advisory Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">CJRC researcher and lecturer from QUT&#8217;s Law Faculty, Mr James Morton has been\u00a0appointed as Chairperson of the Queensland Sentencing Advisory Council.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Yesterday, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D\u2019Ath announced the members of the Sentencing Advisory Council reinstated by the Palaszczuk Government.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Mrs D\u2019Ath said the ten appointees approved today by Executive Council bring a wide breadth of experience and expertise to the Council.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cIt is vital that a properly functioning criminal justice system has the confidence of the public it serves,\u201d said Mrs D\u2019Ath.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201cThese eminent members will help promote an understanding and awareness of the sentencing process in our justice system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The ten appointees to the Sentencing Advisory Council are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><strong>Chairperson Mr James Morton<\/strong> has been a defence barrister for nearly two decades, practicing mostly in regional and rural areas of Queensland and the Northern Territory with indigenous clients;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><strong>Deputy Chairperson Professor Elena Marchetti <\/strong>teaches and researches in fields including criminal law, indigenous people in the justice system and domestic and family violence;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><strong>Mr John Allen QC <\/strong>is a public defender with Legal Aid Queensland and a barrister of 30 years\u2019 experience. He was a member of the former Sentencing Advisory Council;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><strong>Mr Michael Cowen QC<\/strong> is based in Townsville and has been a Crown Prosecutor for more than two decades. He is also an advocate within the Australia Defence Force court martial system;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><strong>Ms Debbie Kilroy <\/strong>is a member of the Queensland Law Society\u2019s Children\u2019s Law Committee and Criminal Law Committee. As the first person with a criminal record to have been admitted to the Supreme Court of Queensland, she brings a unique set of experiences to the SAC;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><strong>Assistant Commissioner Tracey Linford<\/strong> leads the Queensland\u2019 Police Service\u2019s Intelligence, Terrorism and Major Events Command. She has more than 30 years\u2019 policing experience in Victoria;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify\">\n<li><strong>Ms Kathleen Payne<\/strong> is a barrister with experience as both Crown Prosecutor and defence counsel.
