The QUT Consulting Society (QUTCS) was recently founded in response to an observed knowledge gap between students and consulting careers. 2019 is our first year in operation and we can’t wait to hit the ground running!
What is consulting?
Management consulting—or, more specifically, business strategy consulting—is conducted at an organization’s highest level by those charged with making its broadest, most pivotal decisions. It’s about crafting tailor-made strategies that are grounded in facts and common sense rather than pursuing generic visions or dreams. A career in consulting offers an incredible opportunity to build a broad and transferrable skill set while also travelling the world!
But there’s no consulting major?
That’s where we come in. The aim of QUTCS is to provide QUT students of all disciplines with the knowledge and insights to ensure they have the best start possible for a consulting career. If you’re interested in consulting, this is the society for you. QUTCS is non-faculty specific and encourages all students to become involved.
What will I get out of it?
In Semester 1, QUTCS will host four skills-based workshops facilitated by industry professionals that will culminate in QUT’s first internal consulting competition. As well as being a standalone competition, we also hope that our members will be better equipped to apply for QUT’s international competition team and take on universities from all over the world.
What will the workshops cover?
In partnership with real-world industry professionals and other student societies at QUT, QUTCS will host sessions covering the following topics:
- Introduction to Consulting and Case Competitions
- Consulting Frameworks 101
- Implementing strategy and Financial Feasibility
- So you want to build a deck? Getting the most out of Powerpoint
Case-interview practice sessions
In what will be a QUT first, QUTCS will also facilitate case-interview practice sessions hosted by corporate partners and society executives. Given the unique nature of a case-style interview, this would provide immeasurable value to members, as well as providing partners with an early opportunity to identify talent. This event is not one to miss!
Semester two will see the year culminate in QUTCS’ inaugural networking evening. Our vision for this event is an intimate event that produces tangible outcomes for our members and corporate partners alike.
‘What we’re reading’
Ever wanted to get an edge but not sure where to start? QUTCS is here to help! Keep an eye out for our curated list of articles and books to keep you ahead of the competition
Socials
In addition to the workshops and completions, QUTCS plan to co-host a series of social events in collaboration with other societies because although they work hard, the life of a consultant certainly isn’t all work and no play! Keep an eye on our social media and be sure to come find us at O-Week.
