JOHN EMERSON ORATION 2021 : Is the Tax Regime for Charities and Nonprofits fit for purpose?

Join the Law Council of Australia on the 30th of November for the 2021 John Emerson Oration.

The John Emerson Oration is held in honour of John Emerson AM. John is a Member of the Order of Australia for services to law and to the community, particularly through the provision of advice to charities and not-for-profit organisations and the development of public administration reform to encourage philanthropy in Australia.

This year’s Oration will be delivered by Professor Ann O’Connell (Melbourne Law School and Senior Member, Administrative Appeals Tribunal). Ann O’Connell is an Honorary Professor at Melbourne Law School and is the author of Taxation of Charities and Not-for-profits (LexisNexis, 2020). In 2015 and 2020, she worked as an advisor to the OECD, including as co-author of the report on Taxation and Philanthropy (OECD, 2020). She is a part-time senior member of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and an external member of the Australian Taxation Office’s General Anti-Avoidance Rule Panel and the Public Advice and Guidance Panel. The Oration will be chaired by Seak-Huang, Chair of the Not-for-Profit and Legal Practice and Charities Committee, Legal Practice Section.
