Brisbane city may often be forgotten when it comes to talk of student-friendly cities. Sure, Sydney and Melbourne are quite popular for young adults, but I think Brisbane is quite the student’s paradise, and here’s five reasons why!
The winter holidays are a good time to spend indoors as it can be a little bit chilly outside – certainly not weather to be tanning at the beach. But sometimes it’s worth going outside, especially if you live in a wonderful city called Brisbane!
We all have those moments of doubt. You sit there and wonder, “Did I overestimate myself?” or “Will I fall to pieces and crumble under pressure?” or “Will it all be worth it in the end”. If you haven’t already guessed, that’s the position I am in at this very point in time.
May is here already. Sorry, what? I know, right. So that means that year-twelvers are starting to look at/apply for university or TAFE courses and some adults may be looking at mid-year university entry. This was me three years ago- oh lord, I am getting old- and all that hard work, late nights and binge-stress eating paid off because I was accepted into my (at the time) dream degree!
As my first blog post on the Student Sharehouse I thought I would entertain you guys with tips and typically awkward scenarios I experienced in my first year of uni. My first year of uni was a struggle for me, unlike high-school. University is a completely different experience. Let’s get the ball rolling!
Compared to some other health science courses, you start treating patients pretty early on in podiatry. This can be both scary and exciting which is why I’m here to share my experiences with you. At QUT we have the QUT Health Clinics which is a multidisciplinary clinic that includes optometry, podiatry, exercise physiology, nutrition and dietetics and psychology. You can find out more about the clinic here. The podiatry clinic is where most of the clinical placement part of the course is done.

We are now well and truly into Semester Break ! The period in which we briefly throw off the brutal shackles of university enslavement to textbooks, all night cramming, and 6am wake ups.
You know how some athletic/sports themed stories are usually really inspiring ? Like Chariots of Fire or Bend it like Beckham – tales of underdogs, who through hard work, keen natural talent and an ability to fight against all odds achieve great athletic success? I’ll be forward, this is not one of those stories … This is a warning, a humbling parable highlighting the importance of proper preparation.
On May 4th I participated in QUT’s annual fun run event the ‘QUT Classic‘. I thought it was pretty cool that a portion of all proceeds raised from the event would be going to the Learning Potential Fund and the White Cloud Foundation, and having missed out on the QUT Classic in 2013 due to work commitments I was really keen to be running this year. The QUT Classic offers three distance events, catering towards all fitness levels – 1km, 5km, and 10km. It should be expressly known that I had the option of running the shorter distances, but being a stubborn individual I thought; ‘well now, if I’m going to do this, I may as well go for the very hardest option available‘ and thus registered for the 10 km event.
As it’s my final year at university this year, I’m beginning to think about all the experiences I’ve had and things I regret not doing. One of my regrets is not getting more involved in a club or group. There are so many at QUT and it can be a bit overwhelming during Welcome Week with all the tents and groups vying for more members, offering pub crawls and shirts and other freebies.
To make things easier for you, I’ve made a small list outlining just some of the clubs at QUT. It will be easier to join a club during Welcome Week if you actually know a bit about them!
