1. I won’t have enough money
True – you don’t have enough money. You don’t know it yet, but there is money set aside to send you on exchange that you don’t know about! For anyone studying a ‘full time course-load’ overseas, there are two main funding sources. OS help and QUT bursaries/scholarships. These can help make your trip happen (planes, trains, accommodation, food etc). How good is that!? QUT can help you to go to a different country and learn.
2. 6 months away from home will be too long
Yes – it sounds hard. Family, a partner, a cat and a million other things that make it sound easier to stay at home. The good news is you don’t have to study overseas for six months! There are a plethora of summer and winter short courses, from as short as 4 weeks long, which may still be counted towards your studies. These short-term exchanges allow you to settle in and actually live in another country and be immersed in its culture without saying goodbye for too long!
You can spend a month away from home, right? Don’t use time as an excuse!
3. Missing out on my QUT units will mess up the degree
It can be a difficult and arduous process, trying to figure out how you can go on exchange (studying overseas) but still meet the degree’s requirements. Every university teaches different content, and this can pose problems for the dream of both finishing uni on time, and studying overseas. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be that hard. You can use things called ‘elective units’ on any relevant short term exchange – and because they are electives, the scope of flexibility is enormous.
Just like when you would select these electives at QUT, you can pick from a multitude of complimentary study areas (for example, if you were a biology major, you could choose math, physics, environmental sciences, geology etc to study overseas). This means there is more than likely a course in a topic you are interested in, being run in a country you want to visit!
Studying abroad is one of the most mind-opening experiences out there. There is help with money, you don’t have to go forever and you can still graduate on time! Don’t let the opportunity to study abroad slip away!
